TRNSMT festival preview

Words by Innes Reid

It’s only been a few months since it was announced that the world famous T in the Park would be taking a break in 2017, with the possibility of a new mystery festival taking its place. This possibility can now finally be labelled as a reality and the news certainly hasn’t disappointed.

The new TRNSMT festival was unveiled to the public last week by the team behind the world famous T in the Park, and here are a few reasons why it is going to be the place to be at this July.

Firstly, the line up. The organisers of the 3 day event had the intention to create a music festival that caters to multiple age groups, and you can see this by just looking at the headliners. Radiohead are set to play the big slot on the opening night (Friday 7th July). The 5 piece have plenty of experience to boast about after making music for well over 20 years and released their 9th studio album last year so have quite the back catalogue to bang out while on stage on the first night.

Kasabian are second in line to star at TRNSMT, headlining the Saturday evening (8th July). The Leicester guitar heroes are set to release their 7th album later this year, perhaps just in time for festival season. Having already shown they are worthy of headlining during the ’48:13’ tour, the fan favourites sure do belong in the limelight.

To round off the weekend, the befitting Biffy Clyro will be headlining the Sunday night (9th July) of the Scottish festival. Biffy certainly know how to put on a live show and 2016 saw them headline Bellahouston Park as part of the Glasgow Summer Sessions, meaning there will be no surprise to see fans out in force in Glasgow once again this year. The trio from Ayrshire are currently touring their Number 1 album ‘Ellipsis’, with TRNSMT being one of the final stops before disappearing to record album number 8.

Other notable acts announced so far include:

Friday – Belle & Sebastian, London Grammar and Rag N’ Bone Man

Saturday – Catfish and the Bottlemen, George Ezra, The Kooks and Circa Waves

Sunday – The 1975, Twin Atlantic, Two Door Cinema Club and Blossoms

It’s fair to say that for a festival that has no history as of yet, it is definitely worth getting excited for.

The location. TRNSMT is set to pitch up at Glasgow Green on the same weekend as T in the Park traditionally takes place. The amazing open space is right in the heart of the city, famous for its rich culture and music scene. Also, it’s a non camping festival, so there’s no need to worry about tents, or sleep for that matter.

And finally the crowd. If you haven’t managed to experience a Scottish crowd, more specially Glaswegian, you haven’t lived. It is more than likely that the atmosphere at Glasgow Green over the weekend will easily match that of the world famous Barrowland Ballroom as well as the lesser know clubs within the city.

So, if you haven’t already been able to make your mind up, maybe this has helped. I know for sure that I’ll be there, but will you?
